World-Wide “Take Your Child to the Library” Day
In this day and age it’s easy to forget the feeling of certain things. We’ve got the world at our fingertips with our tablets, phones and computers; we’ve become desensitized. Sometimes, we do not remember the peace of certain surroundings, the smell of dozens of books lining wooden shelves, or the way an actual page can be turned with our fingers. That’s why it’s good to remind ourselves that technology isn’t everything and to remind our kids, who are more likely than us to become fully detached from regular life, that it’s good to connect over shared joys.
That is why the Ellicottville Memorial Library is happy to take a full week to celebrate the upcoming “Take Your Child to the Library Day.” Officially on February 1st, this is a worldwide celebration to help families re-discover or discover for the first time, the magic of their local libraries. Libraries are more than just buildings full of books; they are vibrant places where children and adults alike can explore, learn and connect.
Library Director Laura Flanagan stated, “Take Your Child to the Library Day is important to me because I firmly believe that the library is one of the best places for kids to read and learn, which in turn promotes a successful and rewarding life. Reading is so important to a child’s development and once mastered, creates a lifelong love of learning.”
In that vein, the library will be offering free, fun, fabulous activities for families from February 1st through February 8th. A whole week of minute-to-win-it games, a coloring contest, scavenger hunt and more.
The activities will be available during the library’s regular hours, Monday through Friday from 10:00am-5:00pm (closed on Sundays). So stop in anytime it is convenient. Our local library is an ideal place for children to play, discover, make friends, and have fun. And Take Your Child to the Library Day is the perfect time to discover some library magic.
As Laura said, “By creating fun games and activities in the library, we hope that families will come in and explore all that the library has to offer. Libraries are not just about the written word; we connect people to information, experiences, and services that enhance their quality of life so our community can learn, enjoy and thrive. We serve many functions in the community and our philosophy is simple: come one, come all and experience the joy of reading, surrounded by books and new friends.”
