Lunar New Year 2025

The Lunar New Year is upon us! You may see lots of red and gold decorations around and hear musings of the Chinese New Year. What is it exactly?
What many call the Chinese New Year - essentially known as the Lunar New Year - is referred to as the Spring Festival in China; one of the most important holidays celebrated not only by the Chinese but a multitude of other cultures who follow ancient Chinese customs and traditions, believed to date back to 1600 BC.
The Lunar New Year always occurs on the new moon falling between January 21st and February 20th. It kicks off a 15-day celebration, marking the end of winter. It is a time for family reunions, including cleaning of the home together, sweeping away the ails, ills and any misfortune from the previous year.
Red items are displayed on windows and doors to graciously welcome in the new, fresh, joyous spring energy, a clean slate, new luck, and new opportunity. Red is a color culturally representing good fortune, longevity and happiness. People place coins or money into red envelopes and give them to one another to offer good luck, prosperity, and fortune.
There are plenty of feasts and special foods, dancing, parties, and fireworks. The 15-day event concludes with a Lantern Festival, where people release the old by decorating and releasing lanterns up into the sky, a final send-off of anything old, sad or outdated in one’s life that they don’t want carried into the new year.
We are transitioning from the 2024 Fire Dragon energy, which is a yang, sun, daytime or masculine energy. This means action-oriented: asking for the interview, knocking on doors of opportunity, pushing the envelope, asserting yourself to go after what you want in life.
The symbol of the dragon is a prosperous one, signaling empowerment, bravery, self-leadership and courage. The fire element brings the heat: ambition, purpose-driven motivation that helps us say, “Get out of the way, I’m on a mission!”
The year 2024 launched a new 20-year period in Feng Shui. Feng Shui is also a Chinese practice, which uses directional placement of items, colors, and elements to align with the energy of each new year. Each Feng Shui period lasts 20 years. This brand-new cycle is one of endings to what has run its course, a time of celebration and considered auspicious, marking a tremendous time of transformation, revolution, creativity (think modern-day renaissance), and spiritual awakening.
January 29, 2025 brings us the energy of the Wood Snake. The symbology of the snake in Chinese astrology is linked to wisdom, cleverness, intuition, intelligence, and good luck. We often speak about shedding former versions of ourselves, like a snake sheds its skin. You are not the same person you were a year ago, 5, 10, or 20 years ago. Every day is new; how can you shed parts of yourself that no longer serve you?
The wood element is a yin energy. It is associated with stability, finances, resources, growth, and creativity. It requires us not to be ‘stiff as a board’ but to allow for growth potential by being flexible. Try not to be too stubborn with your expectations. You may still get the desired results, but maybe not in the direction or path that you’re planning. You will need to be able to adjust and tweak as the year progresses.
For the diligence and effort put forth in 2024, think of it as planting seeds; this year is to allow the results to appear - your sprouts. This year you want to be nurturing your garden, as your intentions and action take root throughout the year. The snake energy invites us to balance the yin and yang energies.
This day is a new moon in edge Aquarius energy - innovative, intuitive, and bold. It is time for each individual to ‘stand up and be counted.’ Your opinions, your lives, your wellness matters! Finally, we can be heard and counted, rather than being herded!
Happy Chinese New Year! Celebrate your life and follow your passions!
