Allegany State Park plans outdoor activities leading up to Arbor Day
SALAMANCA - Spring into a new season and joint Allegany State Park’s Environmental Educators for a week filled with fun indoor and outdoor activities.
Wednesday, April 23rd: Spring is here! Time to get over the winter blues and get outside! Join a park naturalist for a “Signs of Spring Evening Walk” explaining Allegany State Park’s blossoming spring critters. Participants will be treated to some early signs of spring that may include the display flight of the American Woodcock, chorusing amphibians, newly emerged spring plants and much more. Come early and celebrate Earth Day with making bird feeders using recyclable materials. Earth Day is all about environmental stewardship, and this activity is a meaningful way to reduce waste and support local wildlife. All are welcome.
This free event starts at Site 53, Quaker Beach Road near the gate at the osprey platform and will run from 6:30-8:00pm. Participants should dress for the weather; bring a flashlight or head lamp, camera, and a sense of adventure. Friday, April 25th: A celebration of Arbor Day on the Pat McGee Trail with this community bike/walk event. Participants will meet at Ellicottville Brewing Company parking lot located at 202 2nd Street in Little Valley at 6:00pm, where bathroom facilities are available. Bikers will travel 2 miles south towards Salamanca and experience towering trees, fascinating bridges and beautiful flora and fauna. A limited number of fat tire bikes are available to use for the event or you can bring your own bike. All skill levels of bikers are welcome. The walkers will stroll 1 mile north towards Cattaraugus to the Wetlands to see an array of spring birds and discuss the trees of the area. Leashed dogs are also welcome on the walk. Saturday, April 26th: Plant a tree and leave a legacy! Join park naturalists in celebrating Arbor Day on Saturday, April 26th from 1:00-3:00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy time outdoors while making a lasting impact on the environment for generations to come. Plus, you can visit your tree year after year and watch it grow.
Meet at Anderson Cabin Trail, where volunteers will work alongside park staff to plant a variety of native species. Participants will learn about the species, why we are planting them and about Arbor Day. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, clothes to get dirty in and work gloves if you have them.
